Greetings, Lake Vilbig Residents

September 30, 2024

This letter is to talk about our September 2024 management efforts. I visited once in September on the 25th.  Overall, things look relatively decent. At least it has cooled down some, not much, but some. We received a little rain early in the morning before I arrived. I had no issues getting through the park. We have had so little rain recently that a little bit did not soak into the soil. It just ran off. Despite the recent rain, I barely left any tire tracks driving through the park area. We received a few inches up north, but the lake level was approximately 2 feet low. It takes a little time, a day or two, for the runoff to stop flowing and for benefits to be seen, but I doubt we will see much benefit from this round of precipitation.

On the 25th. Water temperatures are cooling, but not by much. I measured water temperatures of 80. This is a fairly significant decrease since last month, about 8 degrees. We are on a downward slope this year. It is interesting; yes, we had our stretch of weather this summer with temperatures over 100 F., but we never reached 110 plus. This was evident in the observed water temperatures during the summer. I never saw water temperatures over 90 this summer. The pH was still high at 8.5, and alkalinity was at 130. Water clarity was also pretty low; I got 12-18 inches readings. There was a bit of turbidity due to the rain that morning, which decreased water clarity, but it should settle out in a day or two. There was a lot of plankton growth. Still, there are a lot of geese and some ducks around, but not much else.

Overall, Irving Lake looks really good. We are winding the year down. Let’s look forward to cooler fall temperatures and, hopefully, some more rain. Happy Spooky Season, and welcome fall.

Thanks, ILA Residents!
