Irving Lake Association

Irving Lake Association, Inc., President P.O. Box 171111 Irving, TX 75017-1111

Greetings, Lake Vilbig residents!

This letter is to discuss our February management efforts. I came out once in February, On February 25th, to continue our management efforts for the year. It was a cool day on the 25th. I took some lake parameters around the north end. Looking for signs of bird and/or otters or any other potential problem. The temp was 49 F. I only thought temps had bottomed out for the year. But a week of outside temps, which were below freezing, well, that changes things. It appears everything faired well during the snowmageddon event of mid-February. That’s great. Gregg sent me some pictures of the lake is frozen over. At least the fishbowl. From talking to Rick, it sounds like the canal area made it through okay. A lot of this was due to lake depth. It’s harder for deep water to freeze. Let me explain the frozen lakes a little. Lake water is most dense at 38 F. This means it is the heaviest at this temperature. When the water reaches 38, it starts sinking. Pushing warmer water to the surface. Due to air temps being frigid, this warmer water supercools and freezes more rapidly. Lake actually starts freezing at 38 F. Instead of 32 F. The areas where ice was less visible or non-existent are areas where natural spring water is pushing up to the surface. That spring water is generally in the 50s or 60s. Being much warmer, it creates pockets of slushy ice. Alkalinity was 120, which is right around where it normally is. pH was 7.4. Visibility was 50 inches. This is normal as well. Plankton has died off because it is winter. I wouldn’t call the water clear, more stained, but you can definitely see a good distance into the water.

Still several bird species around the lake. These migratory birds should start returning to their summer homes soon. At this point, the article air might have pushed them south for a short period of time. We may see them reappear before they eventually head north again. Spring migration is about to happen. I will be back to start bi-monthly visits in March.

Thanks, Vilbig Residents!
